I tried a technique I am now in love with.

Choose 2-5 fabrics you want to layer in a simple shape.  I use a lot of scraps.  Using your free form stitching on machine do a scribble of your shape over and over - smallest on top fabric first.  Clip threads, cut around to stitching thru the top fabric only.  Repeat in larger sizes for each layer of fabric.  Enjoy your finished scribble shape!
